HERE ARE THE FACTS ABOUT “FLAT-RATE-UP-FRONT PRICING”: Whenever an AC technician, wearing a typical polyester AC tech uniform, shows up at your front door for a service call or a $29.95 “AC TUNE-UP” you’d be well-advised to assume that the so-called “technician” is as POLYESTER as his uniform! Assume the technician is a SID (SALESMAN IN DISGUISE) and keep on assuming it until you see and hear convincing evidence to the contrary.
So-called “Flat-Rate-Up-Front-Pricing” is a price, taken straight out of a “quote book”, that a contractor charges for a job based on his technician’s diagnosis and assessment of the job. In other words, the technician, whether he’s experienced or not and whether he knows what he’s doing or not, is sent out on a service call to your home or business, takes a quick (very quick) look at your air conditioning system in order to determine (or in some cases guess) the cause of the malfunction, and on that basis tells you that it’s going to cost X amount of dollars to make the repairs. AND IN MANY (IF NOT MOST) CASES, THE “TECHNICIAN” WILL ATTEMPT TO SELL YOU A NEW AC SYSTEM! If you agree to the “up-front-flat-rate-price”, then the technician immediately takes your debit or credit card and swipes it before he begins the quoted repairs. In other words, the technician can make up any kind of story he wants as to what repairs, parts, components, etc. are required to get your air conditioning back up and running. And in virtually all cases, you—the unknowing and unsuspecting customer—have absolutely no idea what repairs, parts, components, etc. are required to get your air conditioning back up and running, BECAUSE NOTHING IS ITEMIZED ON YOUR SERVICE INVOICE (ASSUMING YOU EVEN RECEIVE A SERVICE INVOICE). YOU SIMPLY GET A “FLAT-RATE-UP-FRONT-PRICE” WHICH OFTENTIMES INCLUDES AS MUCH AS A 2,000 PERCENT MARKUP ON SMALL INEXPENSIVE PARTS SUCH AS CAPACITORS AND RELAYS.
